An impressionist painting of a city street corner at dusk: a tram, a gull on a bin, a fern in the wall, a chalk drawing, a puddle, and someone walking away
what do you notice on walks?

Go out. Notice things. Keep a postcard of it.

Flaneur is a mindful walking app. Say what you see as you walk, and turn your walk into a postcard to share.

Soon on the App Store

You walk, and then let it paint.

Four steps. Never in a rush.

  1. 1

    Start a walk

Talk out loud to your phone, or put your AirPods in and pocket it. No route to follow, no distance to beat.

  2. 2

    Say what you notice

Share what you see. A tree, a car, a crack in a wall, a pebble on the ground.

  3. 3

    Help me notice

Flaneur can ask one small question, so you notice even more.

  4. 4

    Paint the postcard

At the end, the walk becomes a postcard in a style you choose. Keep it, save it to Photos, or share it.

A walk along the lake.
Many ways to remember it.

An interesting boat on a lake. A cloud above a mountain in the distance. A little flower in the cracks of the pavement on a busy street at rush hour. Whatever you noticed, described your way, imagined in postcards. Painted from what you said, not from where you went: no map line, no distance, no time to beat.

The first three are on us.

After that it is a few credits, or your own key. Walking and keeping the notes never costs anything.

A few credits at a time

No key, no subscription, nothing monthly. Buy a few and use them whenever you walk.

Or paint on your own bill

Paste your own Gemini API key and paint as many as you like. Google charges you, we add no margin.

Questions

Is it recording my whole walk?

It listens while a walk is running, so it can hear what you notice. Your walks stay on your phone. What you said leaves it only when you paint a postcard, and, if your iPhone can't recognise speech on-device, to Apple's speech service. The privacy page lists everything that ever leaves the phone.

Do I have to talk?

No. Plenty of walks are silent ones; the postcard is painted from whatever you did say.

Do I need my own API key?

No. After the first three free postcards, you can buy credits in the app instead.

Does it track my route?

Flaneur doesn't track your location. There's no map, no pace, no streak to protect. Wander badly on purpose.

Where can I get it?

Soon on the App Store, for iPhone. Walking is free, so you can try it on the way home the evening it lands.

How long should a walk be?

As long or short as you need it to be.

Does it work with the phone locked?

Yes. With headphones that have a mic, lock the phone and pocket it; Flaneur keeps listening. Without them, keep the phone out and near you.

Can I write to you?

Please do: hello@paintedwalks.com. A bug, an idea, or a walk you want to tell us about.

even a short one counts
